Uncovering the Largest Pink Diamond in More Than 300 Years

Miners in Angola have reportedly uncovered a massive pink diamond, possibly the largest of its kind to be found in the previous 300 years.

The Daria-i-Noor diamond, the biggest pink diamond in the world, is thought to weigh 182 carats and is currently a part of the Iranian National Jewels. According to reports, the pink diamond weighs 170 carats, which makes it slightly lighter than this gem.

The Lucapa Diamond Company shared that the new diamond has been named "Lulo Rose," after the Lulo mine in northern Angola.

The Lulo mining business has found 27 diamonds weighing more than 100 carats since 2015. It also has the largest diamond ever found in Angola, the 404-carat "4th February Stone," which sold for $16 million in 2016.

The following sections reveal more interesting details regarding this discovery.

The Lulo Rose

The Lulo Rose, the fifth-largest diamond found in Lulo, is expected to sell for considerably more money.

Pink diamonds are relatively rare, and the procedure that gives these stones their rose colour is still a mystery to scientists. South African miners in 1999 found The Pink Star, a rough 132-carat pink diamond.

In 2013, the Pink Star brought in around $83 million at auction. It was fashioned into a 59-carat gem by experts over almost two years.

The release claims that the Lulo Rose will also need to lose some of its mass, which might result in a weight loss of up to 50 percent.

Even if the Lulu Rose is shrunk to 85 carats, the vivid pink stone seems poised to break its own sales record.

Humankind and Diamonds

According to a recent Live Science study, people have been purchasing and trading diamonds since 2500 B.C. They were a sought-after status symbol that could only be purchased for millennia by the wealthiest people on the planet due to their sparkling look and incredible rarity.

Diamonds are formed in the deep earth, typically 100 miles or more below the surface of the earth, when carbon deposits are exposed to the tremendous heat and temperatures of the inner earth.

Although some diamonds may appear during volcanic eruptions, most are now found through large-scale mining operations around the world.

The expulsion of Indigenous peoples, worker exploitation, pollution, and human rights violations have all been associated with diamond mining, according to a report released in 2018 by the non-profit Human Rights Watch.

About 90 million carats of rough diamonds are mined annually for jewelry, bringing in more than $300 billion worldwide.

The Pink Diamond

Pink diamonds are extremely hard and challenging to work with, yet the same physical characteristics that make them special also make them uncommon.

Stores have people waiting in line to purchase such a unique find; therefore, it is unlikely that the stone will be displayed or placed up for auction.

The largest pink diamond ever discovered, the Daria-i-Noor, was discovered in India, and scientists believe it was cut from a far larger stone. The Cullinan diamond, which was discovered in South Africa in 1905, is the biggest rough diamond of any colour ever measured.

The biggest of these, the Cullinan I, is the largest clean-cut diamond in the world and a portion of the U.K. Crown Jewels.

Conclusion

This discovery is truly remarkable, not only because of the size of the stone but also because pink diamonds are extremely rare. It's an incredible discovery to unearth the biggest pink diamond in more than 300 years, and it will undoubtedly be cherished for a long time.
